I thought I had written before why I thought “Shadow of Love” is the saddest song ever. Seems not.
So, here goes…
There are so many sad songs out there, a good number on break ups and the aftermath, but this one is on longing. The longing to be with someone, to have someone to hold on to. My previous entry explains about Serizawa Reira’s character and her wretched existence. “Shadow of Love” encapsulates all her longing.
夢の中何度でも会えるでしょう
This is my favourite line in the song. Her longing for someone is so bad, yet she knows she is alone, and therefore, she can only hope that she sees that someone in her dreams. Perhaps at least, her dreams is the only thing she is in control of and she will be able to meet that someone countless times.
It sounds rather pathetic, but it’s real. That longing is real. And that longing is exactly what makes the song so sad. Coz the harder you wish for something, the expectation is there. When the expectation is there and doesn’t materialise or goes the other way than expected, the fall is harder.
At least, that’s my interpretation of the song…
As mentioned before, all the OLIVIA inspi’ REIRA songs have a tinge of sadness. I guess “Winter sleep” is a close second to being the saddest song.
