I’ve been thinking about this ever since I received the message. I replied to at least choose a mix of songs (as a compromise) or just go with what he likes to make it the best representation of himself. But, I have so much more thoughts about it. 我有话要讲。I need to air these thoughts else it will just stew inside and not sit well with me. (That’s why I have this blog. It’s MY space to air my thoughts and let them flow into words.)
He said he would choose more songs that fans liked. Though the next line hit hard…even if it’s not him. He even added a teary emoji. Like no bro, that’s not how it’s supposed to be. You don’t just please everyone all the time until you feel troubled or just…not happy. You don’t live just to please others. Your happiness matters too; you deserve to be happy too. (And when you’re happy, fans will naturally feel happy too.)
Sure, you may feel your fans are what helped build your success story today and you gotta make them happy, but it doesn’t mean you lose yourself in the process. I think as a fan, I would want to see the best representation of you in a concert coz you will shine brighter when the show is truly you. I mean, that was what made me become a fan in the first place. You push for what you like in your music, even it isn’t the popular sound. These songs that you like make you, you.
Or am I thinking too naively? At the end of the day, the success of the concert hinges on sales and that is determined by what the people want to hear? Urgh. I hate it when tough decisions have to be made like this. Then, how about meeting at the middle?
Or am I just reading too much into a message and overthinking things when it really isn’t such a big deal in the first place?
