The Memory of Dad

Diaryland writing prompt:

What did you keep returning to in your mind?

I’ll change it to ‘do’.

The memory of Dad. It has been almost two and a half years since he left us. I still miss him every day.

I still remember sitting in the car, on the phone with his doctor. The doctor breaking the news that she will be stopping his medication. At that moment, I knew what that meant. Oh, the dread. It meant that we had run out of time; he was at the end of his journey. As soon as I put down the phone, I broke into tears.

Of all his days left after that, somehow this scene is the only one that keeps replaying every so often.

Sis said she had a nightmare once. The nightmare was that she forgot all the memories of Dad. I thought about it. It’s true, I’ll cling to every memory of Dad. I’ll forbid myself to forget anything.

Grief is like that isn’t it? It never goes away. It just ebbs and flows with time.

A friend shared this about grief and I thought it was beautiful.
